An experiment popularized in Popular Science in 1981 compared the use of two types of diesel mini-trucks with the same equipment. For example 12 VW trucks and 10 Toyota trucks are used in trials at a fixed speed of 90 km per hour. If the 12 VW trucks travel an average of 16 km per liter with a standard deviation of 1.0 liter per km and 10 Toyota trucks an average of 11 km per liter with a standard deviation of 0.8 km per liter, make a 98% confidence interval for σ1 ⁄σ2, if σ1 and σ2 each is the standard deviation of the distance traveled per liter of fuel by VW and Toyota trucks.
