On a Navajo Indian Reservation in Northern Arizona a 34-year-old man appears at the clinic complaining of chills, fatigue and muscle aches. His temperature is measured at 102.2°F and there is a distinct swelling of the lymph glands in his groin. There is also a distinct blackening of the fingers and nose. The man tells the doctor that the symptoms appeared quite suddenly over the past 24 hours. He tells the doctor that prior to that he had felt fine and that he just returned from a spiritual retreat in the wilderness three days ago.
