Question

A spica cast is used to immobilize the legs; it is often applied after a type of hip surgery. The cast covers the waist but leaves an opening for elimination. Covering this area provides privacy but is not a form of skin care. The nurse should assess the skin on a regular basis and look for extra fragments of cast material, which can irritate the skin. Regular sponge baths will help keep the skin clean and hydrated. The nurse should check circulation and sensation, and it should be done more often than every 23 hours.
