1. Before coming to the New World, in a section that I don't believe is excerpted here, William Bradford wrote that he and his fellow Puritans would be "in continual danger of the savage people who are cruel, barbarious, and most treacherous." Of course, he had never met a Native American at this point. Based on what you read in "[Dealings with the Natives]," do you feel like his attitude evolved at all or did he still believe them to be "savage and brutish men"? Use evidence from the text.

2. Speaking of an evolution in attitudes, do you see any from Bradford writing about Native American people in the early 17th century to Benjamin Franklin writing in his "Remarks..." in 1784? How so? Consider his tone, but also his content.

3. The Cherokee women who wrote to Benjamin Franklin invoke family metaphors with Katteuha, asking that U.S. leaders "look upon her as a mother" given that she had "taken the privilege to speak to you as my own children." Are appeals to brotherhood and motherhood of the same effect? Or do they aim to achieve different ends?
