SPD3303 - Combustion and Heat Transfer of Premixed LPG/Air Flame - The Hong Kong Polytechnic University

Objective:

To explore the combustion and heat transfer characteristics of premixed LPG/Air flame by:

I. Investigate the "flash-back" and "up-lift" characteristics of the premixed LPG/Air open flame.

II. Investigate the heating efficiency of the premixed LPG/Air impinging flame operating at different Reynolds Numbers.

Discussions and Conclusion:

The following questions may be helpful to make your discussions and draw your conclusion:

Question 1. Why "Flash-back" is obtained at too low Reynolds Number whereas "Up-lift" is achieved at too high Reynolds Number in Experiment (I)? Explain the mechanisms behind these phenomena.

Question 2. What have you observed when "Flash-back" or "Up-lift" is occurring in Experiment (I)? Describe the flame shape, color and stability.

Question 3. Why the heating efficiency is always less than 100% and varying with Reynolds Number of the LPG/Air mixture jet in Experiment (II)?

Question 4. Explain and estimate (in percentage) the sources of "experimental errors" in Experiment (II).

Question 5. What will happen to the experimental results if the fuel supply is double in Experiment (II)?
