Topography refers to the appearance of natural and artificial physical features in a given area. The topography includes physical features such as mountains, swamps, ice fields, and deserts. These features provide references to the implementation of various activities or projects such as building construction, infrastructure implementation such as roads and railways, among other activities. Mountain features and Mils hinder the construction of buildings and infrastructure. This is because constructing a railway or a building in an area with mountains or hills is very expensive. The required finances are mostly too high to afford thus, the project ends up failing. Ice fields also hinder constructions of roads. If roads are constructed in its fields, most of the times the roads end up being covered by ice blockang the road and may also cause accidents.

Buildings are subjected to the varying quality of design and construction thus when upgrading or designing a facility, it is important to consider the topography of where the building will be located. This helps in identifying the risks which may be faced during the upgrade. Considering the topography on an area before upgrading or designing a facility shows how the occupants of the facility are secure and how safe it is to carry out the intended operations ha the area. The prisons on Alcartraz Island in California used a natural harrier. The natural physical harriers contained prisoners have hindered them from escaping ("Handbook of Loss Prevention and Crime Prevention", 2009).

There is the various significance of physical barrier such as distortion of information and hindrance in accessing a particular place. I'm organizations such as medical facilities, physical harriers such as mountains or lulls hinder transport thus making it difficult to access the areas. This may results in deaths due to delayed arrival of patients in the hospitals. Physical barriers also hinder communication. Information may end up being distorted in the process due to low networks. This affects the operations in the organization, thus leading to inefficiency in the firm. However, some physical barriers provide security, such as prisons.
