Tests can determine, with some degree of accuracy, whether a subject indeed has the disease for which s/he is being tested. For instance, a new screening procedure for heart disease was tested on 100 patients with heart disease and 100 patients without heart disease to determine the accuracy and reliability of the procedure. Of those with heart disease, 75 were identified by the test as having heart disease and 25 of the heart disease patients were not identified as having heart disease. Of those people without heart disease, 5 were identified as having heart disease and 95 of the people without heart disease were identified as not having heart disease by the test.
