Topic:

"Solids can be either crystalline or amorphous (non-crystalline). The characteristic order of a crystalline solid allows us to convey a picture of an entire crystal by looking at only a small part of it. Using scholarly sources discuss how crystal properties of the solid state of crystals and powders of both drugs and excipients affect both production of dosage forms and the performance of finished products.

Question

a. Discuss the variety of solid forms that Pharmaceutical active ingredients (APIS) can exist in including

(i) polymorphs, (ii) solvates, (iii) hydrates, (iv) salt forms, (V) co-crystals and (vi)amorphous solids.

b. Discussion should be centered around how these solid forms influence- (i) bioavailability, (ii) manufacturability, (iii) stability and (iv) other performance characteristics of the drug/dosage form e.g. tableting characteristics, solubility etc.

Relate how the crystallization process can impact solid state.
