Part B Personal and Societal Responses to Risk
Select a disaster that is well documented on the web and that is in a situation of interest to you. Provide relevant links etc. of all the sources you use, so that I may see the same detail that you have had access to.
Consider how each of the various influences on people's perceptions of the risk that gave rise to the disastrous Consequences (eg. voluntariness, equitability etc.) described in the Topic 2 notes could be understood in the context of this disaster. Do this considering both the people who were the victims and a representative person from the organisation in control of the risk (employer, Government department issuing development permits or similar).
Comment briefly on the management of these risks by society.
Part C Legal and Victim Views of Risk
Review problem answer (in brief)
(a) Obviously there is a known risk of such occurrences. Discuss in about 500 words the contention that the risk of runway incursion at this airport is acceptable. (This is not to say that a court would find it so after considering all the evidence and the circumstances, but as the legal system is essentially adversarial, someone should put an argument of this case to the court).
b) Discuss (in about 500 words) the process of risk assessment as it applies to this case. Specifically, what considerations might you expect to have been discussed at Linate Airport in relation to this risk if risk matters had been formally addressed?
