Part 1- Socially Progressive Media Product

For this final task you are going to demonstrate all the skills you have acquired throughout the course. Specifically, you will choose a problematic text made by others and re-imagine it so that it reflects your values.

Choosing/Analyzing a Problematic Text

1. Find a media text that you think is problematic in some way.
   • Think back to the texts you examined throughout the course, but especially in Unit 2 (depictions of Canadians, the FNMI community, gender, etc.).
2. Explain how/why you think it is problematic.
3. Analyse the text using the Media Triangle. Media Triangle=Media text, Audience and Production. 
4. Analyse the text using the TAPE framework. TAPE- means-Traits, Abilities/Interests, Physical Representation and Expected roles
5. Brainstorm a couple of different ways that will you correct the problems of the text.
   • Remember that you need to address issues you found in the text and update it so it reflects your values.
6. Choose one of the approaches above (in step 5) to use in your task.

Storyboarding and Planning

1. Storyboard your media piece. Remember that the storyboarding phase is crucial, so plan carefully. You can consult the resources provided in Unit 3 about storyboarding.
2. During the planning stage, ensure that your reasoning is clear.
   • Why did you choose that specific solution to the issue?
   • Will the audience be able to see your reasoning?

Creation/Production

1. The media piece should addresses/corrects the issue you have identified.
2. If your media piece is either audio or video, it should be 4-5 minutes long.

Pitching Your Creation

1. You are then going to pitch your product to someone from a relevant industry.
   • For example, if your media piece is a trailer for an RPG video game that features female characters who are not sexualized, you will imagine that your pitch is to a video game company.

• TAPE- means-Traits, Abilities/Interests, Physical Representation and Expected roles
• Media Triangle=Media text, Audience and Production.

Part 2- Reflection

1. how you came up with the idea for this socially progressive media product.
2. why it solves the problem you see in the original text.
   • Be sure to explain why this is an issue in society and the effects it has on the various audiences.
3. how you created it technically (what program and other technology did you use?).
4. what strategy you used in your sales pitch.
   • How did you get your point across?
   • How did you try to appeal to your audience?
