Socializing New Engineers at Facebook

By the second day on the job, all new engineers at Facebook Bootcamp, six weeks in the trenches fixing software bugs. The primary goal of Bootcamp is to get new hires up speed on all parts of Facebook's code base while developing good long-term habits including fixing bugs as they are found rather than leaving them for future engineers. The immersive cultural indoctri-nation training includes one-to-one sessions with mentors and talks from senior engineers, showing them the ropes and preparing them to quickly contribute to Facebook.

Because Facebook also believes that engineers are most effective when working on things they are passionate about, new hires interview all of the engineering teams during Bootcamp and choose which one they ultimately join.

Facebook credits Bootcamp with its ability to write code and add new features quickly when needed. Consistent with the social networking mission of the company, the friendships and professional networks created during Bootcamp continue as the new hires disperse across the company. Its focus on training may also help Facebook compete with Google and other companies for engineering talent.
