Chose Erikson's psychosocial development theory to apply to Ray's life. This theory focuses on social interactions and Ray's life has been defined by those interactions. Ray is in the eighth and final stage of development, ego integrity versus despair, in this week's video. Due to Ray's dementia we are not sure how he feels about his life. I would say he has a positive outlook and has come to terms with the end of his life. Ray did accept the good and bad parts of his life in week 6 video which aligns with stage seven, generativity versus stagnation.
Throughout this course, we have seen Ray go through several stages of Psychosocial development. This course focused on Ray from age 19 to his death at age 87. This long arch takes us through the final three stages of psychosocial development theory. Utilizing any social work theory can help us, as social workers, see the various stages and views of life. Viewing Ray's life through social work theories helps to see how we change through our lifetimes and things can change in so many ways.
Being aware of any client's current stage of development will assist in your care of the client. Understanding Ray may have some regrets at this point in his life and he may need assistance working through those thoughts is a basic tenet of this theory. Ray faces multiple health concerns in his final years and some of his depression may stem from not fully completing the final stage of psychosocial theory.
Ray has changed quite a bit throughout his life. He was certainly resilient and evolved throughout his lifetime. Ray was able to see his father in himself when he was raising children and watched his temper flare. We have seen Ray go from a struggling addict and nearly being homeless to having a wife, a job, children, and grandchildren who love him.
