There are many different ways to view problems and many ways to address them through different practice modalities In the social work clinical Practice, please review the following video review and Paraphrase the paragraphs written. Please add how different practice modalities could be used as a social worker at children's specialized hospital working with children and families with developmental disabilities:
There is a multitude of ways to view and address problems when working with clients in therapy. There are also various practice modalities we have learned that can be used when working with clients in therapy sessions. However, knowing when and how to use these approaches and counseling theories in therapy can be challenging. I know in my field placement I am in both a high school and elementary school, and each client is unique and has different needs. What may work for one client might not workt for the other. Therefore, I find myself stressed out, scouring my head trying to use the best approach and theories that I have learned about for my client interventions. This definitely did a great job of demonstrating all of the different theories, approaches, strategies, and techniques that can be used in therapy as well as when and how to use them when working with different clients. The video showed 12 segments and each of those segments covered a theory/approach, and showed how that specific theory would look in a real session between a therapist and a client. Theories covered in this video include: (1) Psychoanalytic/psychodynamic, (2) Existential, (3) Rogerian/Person-Centered, (4) Gestalt, (5) Behavior, (6) Cognitive-Behavioral (CBT), (7), Solution-Focused, (8) Feminist, (9) Adlerian, (10) Family Systems, and (11) Reality. Through each segment, Dr. John Sommers-Flanagan and Dr. Rita Sommers-Flanagan both summarized each theory and technique shown during the session with the client, which really helped me understand each approach on a deeper level.
Although I learned a ton from each theoretical framework shown, the one that most spoke to me during this video was solution-focused or goal-focused therapy. This framework stuck out to me the most because I feel it is one of the most effective approaches to use in therapy. The solution-focused framework focuses on the client's strengths and positive characteristics while looking at the negative traits as not weaknesses but areas of opportunity for improvement. Some of the techniques used in solution-focused therapy are scaling questions, relabeling, reframing, and refocusing the session on a more positive aspect while still addressing the problem at hand. Essentially, this approach speaks out to me the most because it is an effective way of addressing the problem using the client's strengths, in return this approach can help the client process their problems and develop a mindset of effective problem-solving when they encounter problems in the future. Overall, after watching this video about some of the existing theories of psychotherapy used in interventions, I have more of an understanding of how and when different theories and strategies can be used. I also learned that using different techniques and strategies can help the framework used in the session be more effective (ex: using a game to help keep a child get involved in the session, or offering a snack to engage the client).
