It is interesting to see how unexpected life events caused people to change and grow. My 80-year-old grandmother is a good example. She was born during World War I and had a traditional family where the father went to work and the mother stayed home to take care of the children. She believed that her life would follow the same course. She married early and had three children before the age of twenty-three. Unfortunately, one died before his first birthday. World War II was the second unexpected event to change the life she had planned for herself. Her husband was in the Army; he was killed in France. Before his death, my grandmother had taken evening courses at a local college. She eventually received her Master's Degree in Social Work and worked for the state for thirty years. Because her life didn't follow the path she planned.
