Social stratification refers to society's categorization of people that are withing it based on factors like their wealth, income, race, education, gender, social status, ethnicity or derived power.
I believe that a moving up a social class in the US Is harder than ever, because everyone is put inside a system from the first day they are born. The whole system of education and doing things in a particular way is embedded into the human mindset now and that is the main reason why we can't look outside of the box anymore, because we are thought to think in a certain way from the first day we step into a school. Just the process that is behind the education system of getting a degree then finding a job and moving up the "ladder" is what doesn't allow people to move up the social class system.
All three main social classes in the US got affected negatively due to Covid-19 in past few years, mainly because businesses, companies and other high job institutions were greatly affected which connects all three social classes. People from the upper class got affected because their businesses didn't make as much money as they did before and were forced to make changes which greatly impacted the middle class and the lower class population which suffered the most from job loss or getting demoted which resolved into a lesser pay or no pay at all while the upper class population didn't feel the same effects like the middle class and lower class population did.
People would usually find themselves interacting and talking to other people that are in a similar situation as they are because they are surrounded with similar things and are in the same social class. While that is a more common it Is not uncommon to socialize and communicate with someone that is outside of your social class.
