Social Problems of The Middle East
Each student will write a 10-page essay detailing a particular social issue related to gender and sexuality in Middle East. Students are free to select a particular topic of their choice while ensuring that it falls within the scope of this thematic area. You may want to focus your argument on the region of the "Middle East" at large or analyze a situation or a case study in a specific country - either an Arab or Muslim majority country or an Arab Muslim community living in non-Arab/non-Muslim countries. The essay will consist of four parts - 1) What is the social issue and why it is important to highlight? 2) In which ways does the social issue draw connections of the present/the past and the local/global? 3) How does the issue being presented/misrepresented in mainstream political and media discourse? 4) From your perspective, in which way this social issue affects the people of the Middle East/Muslim/Arab world (women/men, majority/minority, etc?
