Question 1. We have long known that there are various types of intentional deception (lies). Four specific types are listed in your text. Describe one you use often and what the result is. Next, describe one you find unacceptable. Last, why is one type acceptable to you but not another?

Question 2. Nonverbal communication is powerful and is often more believable than our spoken words. Describe a situation with a family member in which you could deceive this person with nonverbals and have it be accepted (they believe your lie). Next, what do you specifically look for nonverbally when detecting deception in others?

Question 3. We all know the differences between monologue and dialogue. However it is striking how often we consider monologues to actually be true conversations. This phenomenon is known as conversational narcissism. Describe a conversation you have recently been a part of in which the other person displayed this trait (i.e. they hijacked the discussion, made it all about them, had to be right, etc). How did this affect the exchange? What was your reaction to their narcissism? Then, describe a situation in which you catch yourself engaging in conversational narcissism. What was happening? What went through your mind when you realized the way you were treating the people listening to you talk? How did you fix it? Or did you? Lastly, in your opinion is this a legitimate issue within our culture? Is it a danger to you personally? How can being aware of this act impact your current and future relationships?

Question 4. What is the difference between the social penetration theory and the social exchange theory? Which do you find most appealing? Why?
