Social determinants of health are factors in our lives such as where we live work and grow that can affect our health. My community of origin would be the low-income Hispanic community. Some social determinants I noted were economic instability, language barrier, and education. The economic instability from that community meant that annual doctor's visits were not a priority, they were only meant for emergency purposes. That can become a problem to health because certain health conditions may not be found early on due to the annual visits not happening. Language barriers can impact health because it can be difficult for people to explain to doctor's their reason for their visit or to explain their past medical history in detail. For example, if they have certain implants that are not MRI compatible, but the doctors believe it is because it was not translated properly can be dangerous. Education is important because the school system can provide many health resources for low-income families. As a young child I can recall my school providing free dental visits, vaccines, and at times meals. The cultural context of the Hispanic community tends to have less trust in healthcare because the community does not see.
