Assessment: Social capital as a determinant of health behaviour

Introduction

Lifestyle' factors and behaviours, including low levels of physical activity, are well known risk factors for a range of health problems. In this essay, you will consider physical activity in a specific population group, and consider the role of social capital in promoting physical activity. The essay is due in week 8 (end of module 4).
For this Essay:

Question 1) Describe and explain patterns in physical activity (1000 words)
-Choose a specific population group from one of the following:
o Young Indigenous people (under 25)
o Older Culturally and Linguistically diverse Australians
o Single mothers
o Rural men
Review and present evidence relating to levels of physical activity for this population group.
Explain how these patterns of physical activity among this group are socially determined. Refer to issues of gender and/or cultural background in your explanation.

Question 2) Discuss the role of social capital in promoting physical activity (1000 words)
Describe the concept of social capital, and identify how it is linked to other social determinants of health for your chosen population group.
Analyse whether social capital may promote or hinder physical activity among this population group.

You will complete this assignment in two stages:

Stage 1, Week 6: Submit an assignment plan to your learning facilitator, consisting of 500 words. Your assignment plan is an outline which covers:
• The structure of your assignment
• Subheadings describing assignment sections, with bullet points below as to information you will cover in each section

At this stage you can also choose to submit a draft introduction paragraph and concluding paragraph of your essay for feedback, to improve your final piece of work. These draft paragraphs are optional.

Prior to submitting this your learning facilitator will provide some examples of assignment plans.

Your learning facilitator will mark your assignment plan, and your paragraphs if provided, and provide feedback to assist you with the process of preparing the assignment. Feedback to be returned in one week.
