SOC-1160 Introduction to Sociology - Lethbridge College
Research Questions: Students must select one of the following research questions:
1. Deviance
Does getting tougher on criminal behavior deter crime and result in safer communities?
2. Social Stratification
Are people in Canada poor simply because they make bad choices, or are there also social factors that contribute to poverty?
3. Gender Stratification
How does discrimination based on sex, gender, and gender identification remain a significant problem in Canada? (focus on one or more issues)
4. Race and Ethnicity
What are the challenges that immigrants face when arriving in Canada and what are the sociological implications of increasing levels of immigration?
5. The Family
Do alternative family forms (e.g. same-sex marriage, single-parent, common-law, polygamous, etc.) succeed at establishing and promoting family stability?
6. Health and Medicine
There are different kinds of healthcare models around the world. Examples include the American capitalist model and the European socialist model. What elements of these or other models might best serve Canada's current and future healthcare needs?
