The Setting: Smart clothes are an emerging market. Smart clothes can be defined as where electronics merge with textiles to create fashionable, functional, comfortable solutions to meet your everyday needs. Sometimes smart clothes connect us with our technology, such as backpacks with slots for ear buds. Sometimes smart clothes are the technology, such as shirts that can read biometric data. The smart clothes market is a perfect one to analyze and apply some things we've learned in operations management so far, such as customer requirements, translating those requirements into measurable operational goals, and creating flow charts. In this case study, you will write a paper that addresses the following questions.
Make a list of smart clothes attributes that are important to you as a customer. Think like a customer and brainstorm a list of attributes that are important when it comes to smart clothes. Briefly discuss each attribute.
Categorize your list of attributes under a series of major headings. In other words, how would you group your list of attributes in order to start incorporating them into your process design? Provide the reasoning for your groupings.
Make a list of smart clothes manufacturing process design requirements. Associate with each requirement a measure that would ensure that the process meets the requirement. Refer back to the House of Quality example. You do not need to create a house of quality, but you need specific, quantitative measures such as the target values in the house of quality example. Then Design a process that meets your requirements. Describe it by using a flowchart.
