Anaya is the human resources management coordinator for a small local home improvement and renovation store in Winnipeg. She is responsible for all human resources management tasks-from employee recruiting to termination. The store is located in a large suburban neighborhood and most clients are older homeowners. The store mostly sells repair and small renovation materials to this local community.
The store employees are mostly part-time and a mix of younger students and older retired skilled-trades people. The younger employees work while studying at college or university; there are currently no high school-age employees. The older employees are often former electricians, plumbers, or general construction employees. The organizational culture with the two different generations is often challenging as each group appreciates different workplace values. Additionally, the retention of the younger employees is less than the older employees.
As summer approaches, home renovation projects are beginning to pick up in the community and a number of younger employees who have just graduated from college and university have resigned to begin their careers. The general manager is becoming frustrated with the employee turnover and tensions among the employees. He asked Anaya to only hire older employees in her next employee recruiting campaign as he thinks this will address the turnover and cultural problems.
