Question
Mrs. J, a 54-year-old female, slipped and fell doing the groceries and fractured her left wrist. On discharge from hospital, her GP referred her for a DEXA scan (type of medical imaging test that uses low levels of x-rays to measure how dense your bones are) of her spine and hip which indicated a T score of -2.0. (A T-score equal to or above -1.0 is considered normal bone density; a T-score between -1.0 and -2.5 is considered low bone density, sometimes referred to as osteopenia, and a T-score -2.5 or below is considered osteoporosis) Mrs. J works part time as a teachers aid in a primary school. She lives with her husband and 2 teenage children. She does not smoke or drink alcohol. She has a BMI 20kg/m2. On questioning, Mrs. J reports ongoing lower back pain for the past 6-9 months. She attributes this to the physical nature of her job working with children. Mrs. J walks laps in the pool twice weekly with friends but reports that it's becoming increasingly difficult to keep up with the back pain she's been experiencing.
