Question

The six aims of healthcare quality are highly important to ensure that healthcare organizations focus on all critical areas to enhance quality and patient outcomes. I chose patient-centeredness and timeliness as a current practice at my work that could use improvement to enhance quality. Patient-centered care should be "respectful of and responsive to individual patient preferences, needs, and values,"(AHRQ, 2022). Short staff and lack of communication are common but when not enough staff members are available, it can lead to increased workloads for the remaining healthcare providers. This results in rushed interactions with patients, limited time for individualized care, and can compromise attention to patient needs and preferences which is something I see almost every shift. Patients can begin to feel neglected or receive care that is not preferred or thorough. Along with timeliness, short staffing can lead to longer wait times and delays in responding to patient needs. Both of these aims of healthcare quality can reduce the overall quality of care. By addressing all six aims of healthcare quality, healthcare providers can ensure that they deliver safe, effective, timely, efficient, equitable, and patient-centered care to all individuals.
