SITXHRM004 Recruit, select and induct staff - Pax Institute of Education
Assignment for Commercial cookery
Assessment 1 - Project (Recruit/Select Staff)
In this assessment we are going to Identify the recruitment needs and administer recruitment. We are going to use the scenario of PAX HOTEL. You are the Human Resource Manager of this hotel. The hotel is a 5-star boutique hotel located in Melbourne CBD. It currently employs 150 staff in many different departments. The structure of their employment range form:
1. Casual, contract or temporary
2. Full time or part-time - permanent employees
3. Volunteers
You have had meetings with the general manager and department heads and you have become aware of the need to recruit new staff in the hospitality department to meet increased demand.
To recruit, hire and induct the new staff for the hotel you will need to complete several different steps. First step is to begin your research, make sure you consider the following:
• Determine the number of staff required (You must choose a minimum of three (3) which includes
one from each of the categories above.
• Determine the employment structure) i.e. full time, part time or contract etc)
• For this assessment you must choose one (1) permanent and one (1) casual and one (1) volunteer - for your 3-new staff).
• How the applicant will apply. E.g. telephone. email or online
• How you plan on interviewing the applicant e.g. one person or a panel interview.
• Most importantly -Determine the essential selection criteria for the job. - what skills must they have? What qualifications must they hold? What characteristics must they demonstrate for the role?
• Detail the Selection Criteria I.e. Job Description for Three (3) of the above employment categories
Once you have completed this initial research you will then create a:
Job Description
This job description is based on the positions x (3) you chose for the hotel. If you have never prepared a job description before you may like to use the template: Use the link below.
A sample job description/template is also included on the next pages You will be guided through how to create your job description and then you may download the templates adjust them and apply them.
These templates and tools are created by Fair Work - (Government organisation that helps support businesses/employers and employees) These templates are available to download and customise for any business.
Once you have completed the job description you will then research job advertisements, read through the information provided by Fair work or in your learner guide to ensure you understand the difference between a job description and a job advertisement. Next create your job advertisement for your position(s) at the ‘PAX HOTEL.' You will compile this research and your documents ready to be submitted to the Operations manager for ‘approval of the recruitment based on Pax's organisational recruitment policies and procedures.
Job Advertisement
Now that you have your 3 x job descriptions - / (selection criteria) you will proceed with the recruitment selection and orientating phases. Your job advertisement will be based on your completed job description. The aim of the advertisement is to "attract" the right candidate to your organisation and the role.
So, it is important that you show the benefits that a candidate would gain by working for your company. Include your logo and branding -Consider the look and feel of the job advertisement.
In your report show research of which mediums you will consider i.e. will you use print/newspaper advertising or digital e.g. Seek or Careers One. Explain your reasons for your choice.
Consider the jobs appeal to applicants, e.g. salary benefits as well as essential component such as: What the job is and what is the criteria - this is where the job description will be partially used.
Then you will need to include HOW they should apply telephone names and numbers or email and email addresses, make sure you note if there are any deadlines for closing applications.
Finally, you will need to make sure that your advertisement is lawful and does not cross any Discrimination
Laws and promotes Equal Employment Opportunities (EEO).
Now before you go ahead and place your ad you will need to have the next items created and ready before you can start receiving applications for review and selection.
Assessment 2 - Activity/Role Play
Now that you have created the basic foundations and necessary documents - it's time for you to receive applications for your job opening.
You will complete the following steps:
1. Review the applicant's CV (Resume)
2. Short list the candidates.
3. Interview a range of the successful candidates
4. And finally select a person you believe is the most suitable to fulfil the role.
In this assessment you will need to demonstrate these skills.
We will utilise a simulated environment for the role play with digital/video.
This may also be done in the classroom face-to face if you have enough students for 3 applicants to each interviewer. Otherwise this online option is a great tool to use.
This will help you later for shortcut access to specific data for this task.
The first tab - PLAN helps you to understand the process of hiring staff - all the Australian laws, it also forms your ‘research' for selecting what staff you need e.g. how many, what contract they should be on e.g. permanent or casual. So, you will select your own criteria in this section. Answering these questions now will form the basis of your interview and selection.
The second tab - SELECT this is where you will complete your video-based role play interview.
Based on the criteria you have set form tab 1 - you will short list 3 candidates and decide to interview them. You will need to play the video and answer the questions as to which candidate you believe is the most suitable.
This online learning will also provide feedback on your responses. You can also go back and repeat or choose different options.
The 3rd tab is ONBOARD - so this another term meaning ‘induction' this is after you have chosen your candidate and will need to create an induction program which will be your NEXT ASSESSMENT.
Finally, the fourth tab is TOOLKIT - this you will find very valuable - it contains several template documents to ensure that processes for hiring. Recruiting and inducting staff are done correctly and effectively. These templates are created for businesses/employers/employees to download and customise to their own needs.
After you have completed all the activities in this online learning you can then download your certificate by clicking on the download certificate box. This will be sent to the email you entered.
Assessment 3 - Project- (Induction Process)
Now that you have selected the successful candidate and they have accepted your letter of offer, you will now prepare an orientation
/induction programme.
For this task you will need to create a list of documents that will incorporated into your induction kit.
Prepare some research and ensure your kit includes the following (but not limited to):
Create a checklist for the induction which must be signed and dated by the new employee as they receive the information/training.
The rest of your induction program will need to be completed like an ‘Employee handbook'.
You may refer to your learning resource or the Fair work guide as to what types of documents and information needs to be contained within this handbook for a new employee of the company.
You will be required to submit your staff induction kit to your assessor for marking.
Ensure it contains as much of the above as you can source and apply to the scenario for Pax Hotel.
Your kit will need to be professionally presented. Use Times New Roman style font and font size 12.
Please include a table of contents, use headings and sub headings for easy reference.
Include pictures, graphs, diagrams, tables etc to make your orientation kit easy to read and follow for the new employee.
