A good theory, according to our textbook, has simplistic explanatory power(Bouton, 2016). A theory with explanatory power can explain future data as well as explain what is seen through observations. Our textbook explains that in order to create a sound theory, the researcher must have full knowledge of the phenomena(Bouton, 2016). This knowledge includes but isn't limited to history and any present theories based on the information. There arises the question, what does it mean if there aren't any previous theories created on the phenomena? Because a spectacle has no previous theories, it shows that the researcher is headed in the right direction of creating a new theory (Bouton, 2016). Regarding Affective Extension Sometimes operant process (AESOP), this edited version of Wagner's SOP model may be considered a "good" theory. I say this because this model has made a few breakthroughs. This theory states that Unconditional stimulus is combined with the sensory and emotive nodes, creating different responses when the conditioned stimulus (CS) is being taught (Bouton, 2016).
When referring to Lloyd Morgan's Canon, this theory states that something of higher functioning cannot explain the animal's behavior if it can be explained by something simpler(Bouton, 2016). Morgan was viewed as a simplistic person who created this, so the researchers didn't forget about the simple causes. This is an essential force to the field because of its importance in comparative psychology.
It was essential for Mackintosh, Pearce and Hall to add attention to the mix. With Mackintosh's theory of learning holding more explanatory power than the AESOP, his attention they makes it a more intricate (Bouton, 2016). The attention theories created a better understanding of latent inhibition. I dont beliuvee that the scientist gave up too early. The researchers were simply just looking for the next possible reason to continue their research.
