Mendelian Inheritance (Simple, dominant or recessive inheritance)

1) Define the following:

a. Allele

b. Homozygous

c. Heterozygous

d. Phenotype

e. Genotype

2) a. What are the three possible genotypes (shown as letter combinations) and the two possible phenotypes (a description of the trait) for a characteristic controlled by two alleles, B and b, with B dominant and b recessive? REMEMBER when recording your answers that the phenotype is NOT designated by allele letters, but an actual, written out description of the trait: has the trait/doesn't have the trait.)

b. You should have listed 3 genotypes and 2 phenotypes in your answer to part a. Why are there more genotypes than phenotypes possible? (Think about this--it's an obvious answer, but whether or not you can explain why really lets me know if you understand how this works!)

Non-Mendelian Inheritance

3. Define and give an example NOT FROM the readings (you might have  bit of internet searching) for each of the following:

a. Polygenic traits

b. Incomplete dominance

c. Codominance

4. Why are more males than females color-blind?
