Simple concept how does fan bring in more air

I always wonder how does putting a fan at the front of the engine bring in more air in the engine. What i feel is that the fan is not acting as a suction chamber to suck in air, it basically increases the pressure and temperature of the air molecules passing through it.Question is the basic reason why a fan was put in a turbofan engine was to increase the air intake in the engine. Can somebody kindly explain me in simple concept how does a fan bring in more air?
