1. Religion dates back 100 millennia and more. Science, as we know it, is a recent occurrence. Although it is and has always been this one World that Man has found himself in/on, there are many religions yet apparently just one rational, empirical inquiry called science. Why did Religion appear before Science? Does the passage from polytheisms to monotheism in religion have any connection with the emergence of the natural sciences? Explain with examples to support your reasons.
2. "Faith and reason are like two wings on which the human spirit rises to the contemplation of truth; and God has placed in the human heart a desire to know the truth -- in a word, to know himself -- so that, by knowing and loving God, men and women may also come to the fullness of truth about themselves." (cf. Ex 33:18; Ps 27:8-9; 63:2-3; Jn 14:8; 1 Jn 3:2).
Pope John Paul II begins his Encyclical Letter, Fides et Ratio, with the above biblical quote. What does the above quote mean to you concerning the compatibility of Faith and Reason, the relation between Religion and Science?
3. Philosophical (logical), Psychological, Moral and Scientific arguments for the existence of a God have been presented. Which one of the arguments is, for you, the most convincing and WHY? Please present the argument, the author of the argument, and explain why (give your reasons and evidence) your chosen argument is sufficiently convincing.
4. The similarities and parallels in the life, teachings and death of Socrates, Jesus, Martin Luther King. Please identify and discuss the many conditions, events, purposes and outcomes both, social, cultural, religious and political that these three historical individuals have in common? How well does this topic fit into the Faith-Reason course?
5. "The Crusades (1095-1300 A.D.) plsyed a tremendous role in the arrival of the Renaissance, the Scientific Revolution, the Enlightenment and the Age of Discovery." Please give your reasons, supported by examples/evidence to support the truth of this statement.
6. Frederick Nietzsche, in his Parable of the Madman and William James, in his essay, The Will to Believe, both discuss the power of reason-science and the loss or possible void that have emerged in the culture and daily life of Man in Western Europe and America at the end of the 19th Century. What has been lost? What caused this loss? What must we guard against? What must we exercise to combat the possibility of this loss? Please use Nietzsche's and James' reasons and explanations presented in their respective essays in your responses.
