Karl Marx and Mikhail Bakunin were important critics of the politics system that emerged in western Europe in the wake of the French revolution -modern, secular, liberal democracies. Compared to other political theorists, Marx and Bakunin viewed liberal, secular democracies as conduits for capitalism, which legitimized the exploitation of the poor and, despite the pretense of political equality, produced social and economic inequality. They believed liberalism offered a restricted notion of political and social and economic inequality. They believed liberalism offered a restricted, deficient notion of political and social freedom. They were both critical of the ways religion is used by the state in support of the powerful.
