Question: In the 1930s, members of the Federal Writers' Project, a branch of the WPA, began to record the narratives of African-Americans who had been enslaved in the United States before and during the Civil War. The goal was to gather and preserve an oral history of slavery told in the words of the former slaves themselves. The file posted to this module contains the transcripts of oral narratives of former slaves from Ohio. Examine ways in which the narratives of Frederick Douglass, Hannah Davidson (pp. 26-32) and/or that of Perry Sid Jennison (pp. 50-54) reflect a shared experience. In your view, are there significant ways in which the accounts differ? Be specific.
