Using skills gained so far, you should be able to understand, recognize and appreciate the significant range of components to strategic promotion as it related to controlling the channel of distribution.

There are four basic components to promotional strategies that companies may use to communicate their messages to the marketplace, 1) advertising, 2) personal selling, 3) publicity, and 4) sales promotion. Communications underlies each of these.

Explain the relative emphasis that would be placed on advertising or personal selling in two of the following situations (replies need to offer constructive criticism on the posts of peers- what would you change and why?):

1. A manufacturer of an infusion pump therapy kit for use in hospitals.

2. A hospital offering a nutrition workshop for seniors.

3. An academic medical center offering a helicopter service for trauma cases within a 200-mile radius of the facility.
