While utilizing the resources for our topic one, discussion question two, the first significant event that influenced the history of counseling, specifically school counseling, was the development of the George-Barden Act of 1946. The George-Barden Act administered funding for state supervisors, counselor-trainees, research, and salaries for guidance supervisors (counselors.) This step made it possible for states to employ, under partial support of Federal money, a state supervisor working full time to the development and responsibilities of guidance programs in the schools of different states to meet the critical needs of individuals through the advancement and expansion of the mental resources and technical skills of its young men and women. (Gysbers, N., 2010)
Clifford W. Beers was another significant influence in the history of counseling. 1909 Beers founded the National Committee for Mental Hygiene, renamed the National Mental Health Association (NMHA) in 1950, and later renamed the Mental Health America (MHA) in 2006. Upon Clifford W. Beer's struggles with mental health, individually and within his family, his goals were to educate those regarding mental health as well as be an advocate for spreading awareness around the globe. The education and developments in mental health would not have been possible were it not for Beers communicating about his struggles and obstacles while promoting treatment plans for others with similarities. (Watson and Schmit, 2020)
As counselors in training, we must create our own professional identity. This provides a sense of self-assurance and a distinct identity for our profession. It can include commitment and education in one's field, beliefs, values, social-cultural expectations, and overcoming ethical challenges while defining our role and responsibilities throughout our counseling journey. A strong professional identity provides stability, certainty, and pride in oneself and one's position. (Davidovitch and Heled, 2021)
This profession is differentiated from other helping professions because clients rely on counselors to guide them through obstacles and troubles they may not know how to navigate. When individuals view us as experienced, confident, and knowledgeable, they confide in us, resulting in improved results. By conveying this in our professional identity, clients and students begin to see how important and life-changing counseling can be for them and others. Other helping professionals may not be as personable as counselors with their clients.
