In a study examining the power of imagination, Cervone (1989) asked subjects to think about factors that could influence performance on solving mazelike puzzles. In one condition, subjects imagined positive factors that could make the task easier, and in another condition, subjects imagined negative factors that would make the task more difficult. Later Cervone measured task persistence: how long the subjects continued working on the task, or how quickly they gave up (measured in minutes). Hypothetical data, similar to Cervone's, are as follows: Positive condition: n1 = 12, 1 = 28 with s12 = 23 Negative condition: n2 = 12, 2 = 22 with s22 = 20 Conduct a t-Test (two-tail, α = .01) for two Independent groups to see if there is a significant difference between the two groups (follow the Handout).
