Globally, social work is understood as a human rights profession, and the related values of the dignity and worth of all persons and social justice are seen in the NASW Code of Ethics. As social work professionals, using a human rights lens enables us to understand root causes of needs and to respond in a way that empowers communities (Mapp, McPherson, Androff, & Gatenio Gabel, 2019; National Association of Social Workers, 2017).
Review one of the following documents from the United Nations:
- Universal Declaration of Human Rights
- Convention on the Rights of the Child
Select a social services agency you would like to analyze. If you are working in a social services agency, you may use your workplace for this assignment. If you are not working in a social work environment, please select a social services agency that has an online presence.
Larger organizations, such as the United Way, Salvation Army, Red Cross, Catholic Charities, or Goodwill Industries, will typically have more information available online, which will help you complete this assignment.
Identify articles within the document you selected that are applicable to the agency you selected.

Imagine you are working for a social services agency. You have been tasked with reviewing different aspects of your organization to ensure the agency's mission and work are in alignment with human rights legislation.
You will present your findings to agency board members.
Write a 700 to 1,050 word executive summary in which you analyze the application of individual human rights within a social services agency's management processes. Include the following in your summary:
Mission, Vision, or Purpose
- Summarize the mission, vision, or purpose of the agency.
- Assess whether human rights principles or language have been incorporated in the mission, vision, or purpose of the agency. Be sure to cite specific articles from the document you reviewed.
- Explain how the incorporation or absence of human rights principles or language in the mission, vision, or purpose may affect the work of the organization.
Programs and Campaigns
Explain how the agency incorporates human rights-based concepts or strategies. Consider these guiding questions:
- Which programs or campaigns within the agency or community setting use human rights-based concepts?
- How do human rights show up in the work of the organization or in the community?
- How might existing programs or campaigns better advance the human rights of those involved?

- Describe the messaging of your chosen organization or community setting.
- Explain how a human rights perspective could be integrated into the brand or advertising strategies of your chosen organization.
