I find the stapling feature for the photocopier in our dept to be not very reliable. The industry standard is that only 2% of items should be stapled incorrectly. In a sample of 120 handouts made for a course, 6 were badly stapled.
a) At a 0.025 significance level using the critical value approach, test to see if the % error is higher than the industry standard. Clearly state your hypothesis and conclusions.
b) How many incorrectly stapled handouts would have to be in the sample of 120 for you to change your conclusion in (a)? Round to whole handouts?
c) If the true % of errors for the copier is 2.5%, calculate the probability of making a type II error for your test in part (a).
One airport had 28% late arrivals. After a new directing system was installed, a sample of 1200 flights had 322 late arrivals. At the .01 level, did the new system lower the rate of late arrivals? List the null and alternate hypotheses.
After researching cysts of a particular type, a doctor learns that out of 10,000 such cysts examined, 1,500 are malignant and 8,500 are benign. A diagnostic test is available which is accurate 80% of the time (whether the cyst is malignant or not)..

Suppose that the MBA education industry is constant cost and is in long run equilibrium. Demand raise, but due to strict accreditation standards, new companies are not allowed to enter the market.
A sample set of 29 scores has a mean of 76 and a standard deviation of 7. Can we accept the hypothesis that the sample is a random sample from a population with a mean greater than 72? Use alpha = 0.01(1-tail) in making your decision.
The standard deviation of fresh fruit consumption is about 30 pounds. Suppose a researcher took a random sample of 38 people and had them keep a record of the fresh fruit they ate for one year.
A scooter factory runs three assembly lines, A, B, and C. 98.9% of line A's scooters pass inspection, while only 97.8% of line B's scooters and 98.5% of line C's scooters pass inspection.
Nine randomly selected statistics quiz scores are listed below. Use a .10 level of significance to test the claim that the variance of all scores in the population is more than 9. 15,18,10,19,11,12,15,17,15
A telemarketing firm in a certain city uses a device that dials residential telephone numbers in that city at random. Of the first 100 numbers dialed, 51% are unlisted. This is not surprising because 48% of all residential phone numbers in this ci..
Assume that the relationship between the growth of a fish population and the population size can be expressed as g = 2P - 0.1P, where g is the growth in tons and P is the size of the population (in thousands of tons).
