Question

Tomas rented a truck in San Diego to drive to Chicago. He put the rental contract with his signature on it in the glove box of the truck. During his drive to Chicago, Tomas stopped at a hotel for the night. When he woke up, he saw police dogs sniffing at the rental truck. Tomas had cocaine in the truck so he ran away before the police arrested him. During an inventory search of the truck at the police impound lot, an officer found the rental contract. The police used Tomas's name and address on the contract to locate Tomas. Tomas denied any knowledge of the cocaine, claiming that he returned the truck and that he was not at the motel. The police asked the motel manager if Tomas had stayed at the motel. The manager provided the police with documentation showing Tomas had stayed at the motel, including a credit card authorization form with his signature. The police questioned Tomas again and asked for a sample of his signature. Tomas did so. The police then asked him if the signature on the motel records was his, and Tomas admitted that it was. The police did not obtain any warrants.
