Aiden, a 3-year-old African -American boy with sickle cell disease is being admitted to the pediatric unit. He has had a runny nose, slight fever, and vomiting over the past 2 to 3 days. He has not been eating well and is complaining of pain in the right leg and refusing to walk. On assessment you find his vital signs to be temperature 101.7°F, pulse 132, respirations 32, and blood pressure 88/52. He is coughing, he has slightly dusky mucous membranes, and his capillary refill is 4 seconds. His father is at the bedside.
