Shue three principles of fairness
1. Contribution principle: "When a party in the past has taken an unfairadvantage of others by imposing costs upon them without their consent, those whohave been unilaterally put at a disadvantage are entitled to demand that in thefuture the offending party should shoulder burdens that are unequal to the extent ofthe unfair advantage previously taken in order to restore equality"
2.Ability to pay principle: those who have the most resources out of all thosebound to contribute should normally contribute the most
3.Guaranteed minimum principle: it is unfair not to guarantee everyone atleast an adequate minimum if the total resources available are so great thateveryone could have at least enough without preventing some people form stillretaining considerably more than others have
Reserve Management Group purchased the General Iron scrap metal recycling facility near Lincoln Park in Chicago with the intention of shutting it down and building a new facility in Chicago's southeast side, in a poorer and majority Latino area. First, identify and explain each of Shue's three principles of fairness. Then apply each of these principles to the case of General Iron, using them to explain why moving the scrap metal recycling operations is unjust.
Do you think that all three of Shue's principles are correct? If so, use them to explain how we should decide where to locate socially necessary but harmful and undesirable facilities like General Iron. If not, explain which of the principles you disagree with and why, and explain how that impacts the General Iron case-whether its relocation is just or unjust, and what should be taken into consideration when deciding where to locate these kinds of facilities.
