Photon-propelled rocket
A rocket of initial mass M0 starts from rest and propels itself forward along the x axis by emitting photons backward.
(a) Show that the four-momentum of the rocket's exhaust in the initial rest system can be written P = γMf v(-1, 0, 0, i), where Mf is the final mass of the rocket. (Note that this result is valid for theexhaust as a whole even though the photons are Doppler-shifted.)
(b) Show that the final velocity of the rocket relative to the initial frame is
where μ = M0/Mf is the ratio of the rocket's initial mass to its final mass.
What is the function of the system -
You are given a sheet of steel with a modulus of rigidity is G = 80.8 Gpa, a length L = 1 m, width w = 100 mm, and thickness t = 1 mm. You are asked to design a shaft cross-section by shaping the given steel sheet. The machine that is available to yo..
Water flowing through a 10-cm-diameter water pipe at a rate of 0.1 m3/s. Now a diffuser with an outlet diameter of 20 cm is bolted to the pipe in order to slow down water. The inlet side of the pipe is part of a continuous piping system (so that th..

A lever of negligible weight is loosely fitted onto a 75-mm-diameter fixed shaft. It is observed that the lever will just start rotating if a 3-kg mass is added at C. Determine the coefficient of static friction between the shaft and the lever.
For the process where q= 62.5 kj/kg and wkcs= 60 kj/kg determine the energy change if the system mass is 2 kg.
