Question: Researchers wanted to know whether the early season phenology of eastern deciduous forest wildflowers was related to the high amount of sunlight available before forest trees regrow leaves. They devised an experiment where spring beauty plants were in full sunlight or in shade, to mimic mid-summer forest understory conditions.

Plants in each treatment (Full sun or shade) were grown for 8 weeks and then dried and weighed.

a. Draw a figure where you predict (plot) the change in biomass for spring beauty plants under the sun and shade treatments. A value of 0 would represent no change in biomass, relative to the start of the experiment. Please show both positive and negative changes in biomass on the graph.

b. In a few sentences, please explain the rationale behind your prediction in 4a. Please include the words photosynthesis and respiration in your answer.
