Description
Lost most, if not all, people, I was stunned and saddened by the events that were depicted in the video, Spain's Stolen Babies. I know this type of crime is not uncommon, but what is rare is to see it committed on such a massive scale, and by the institutions that are supposed to protect people, like the Catholic Church, the medical community, and the Spanish government. Of course, it was the government of the fascist dictator, Francisco Franco, so it's not really all that surprising that it happened. But while governments can be corrupt and it not come as all that much of a shock, I was a little more surprised by the Catholic Church's role in the scandal. How can a religious organization become so identified with a political ideology that it feels free to justify such a heinous act as stripping a mother of her child? I'll never understand that. And the role played by the medical profession, especially Doctor Vella, was truly shocking. Keeping a corpse in the freezer to bring out every time he needed to show a grieving mother her dead child? The arrogance required to judge these mothers unfit to keep their own children is staggering.
And besides the incredulity that this video provoked, it was heartbreaking to watch the broken families struggling to find loved ones, whether they be sons and daughters, mothers and fathers, brothers and sisters. There was the old man who broke down into sobs while recalling his stolen childhood. And the two men who went to see the old nun, hoping she'd have information for them about their mother. I knew, of course, that there was no way she'd remember the details they needed, and they probably knew it too, but they were desperate for any clue that she could provide, and I'm sure I would have felt the same way, begging her for details. I was really hoping the video would have a happy ending, and that Randy was related to Mar and her mother, and I was very disappointed when the DNA results were negative. But I guess a story like this can't really have a happy ending, not while all these people are left with so many unanswered questions.
