Case study

You're a social service worker working in a rural medical clinic. A mother brings her child to the health centre with a scald burn along the child's head, face, and shoulders. The mother explains that four-year- old Chloe pulled a boiling pot of spaghetti from the stove onto herself. That explanation seems to fit the burns. When the triage nurse asks for more details about the incident to provide the best medical care for Chloe, the mother admits that she really doesn't know what else to add because she was outside hanging laundry. She's clearly distraught and admits it was a terrible accident, but states emphatically that Chloe had been told repeatedly never to touch anything on the stove and knew better.
