Assignment:

Please help me answer this discussion board question for my History and Philosophy of Sport and Physical Activity class.

We often take for granted the links between sport and national identity. Consider the example of international soccer. As it developed, players represented their nations on the pitch, and national teams became iconic representations of their citizens. But is this a morally defensible practice? Should we create teams along national lines? Did having Italy compete against France at the 1938 FIFA World Cup ease or exacerbate hostilities? Or consider the Olympics, which are organized on the basis of nationality and invite comparisons and competition between nations. Do the Olympic Games increase tolerance and mutual respect between opposing athletes by highlighting their common love of sport? Or does the competitive environment further divide athletes along national lines?
