Thinking Through the Past: A Critical Thinking Approach to U.S. History, Volume II, 5th Edition
Lab L: The Battle over Immigration
Reading: Hollitz, 343-81
Prompt: Far Thinking Through the Past: A Critical Thinking Approach to U.S. History, Volume II, 5th Edition from being an arbitrary field thrusted only upon students, history in fact saturates public life and is used constantly to justify political positions and policy decisions of the day. We must therefore be scrupulous in examining how people use history-which they often do in selective, self-serving ways. Immigration, this week's subject, is a case-in-point. Fewer issues in the United States have been more vexed and more guided by fear than fact. For this lab, first summarize the opposing arguments of Otis Graham, Jr. and Portes and Rumbaut about how Americans should understand immigration in the twenty-first century. Is it a threat and a problem, a resource and a national strength, or some combination of the two, according to the authors? Then use the primary sources to develop your own argument to that question. Finally, address the larger question of why people use history to support positions on contemporary issues.
