Assignment: Research Paper Guidelines
Instructions: Select one of the 4 topics listed below. Be sure to do outside research on your topic in addition to the material covered in class lectures and in your text book. Type a 5-page MINIMUM research paper on your chosen topic. Present your paper in black ink on white paper, formatted in 12 point font, with 1 inch margins on all sides. Double space your paper and do not skip lines between paragraphs. Avoid lengthy quotations; paraphrase instead of quoting. Include a title page, with a title, your name, the course information and class time. The title page and the citation/reference page are not part of the 5 page minimum requirement.
Cite your sources using the MLA, APA, or Chicago Style citation methods. If you need help with citation methods be sure to look at the Lone Star College Library page for resources. Always cite your sources. Be sure to use at least 4 print sources and 2 outside sources for a total of 6 sources. Remember that if you did not produce the information on your own, show where you obtained it from. If you did not generate the idea on your own, show where you found it. Failure to cite your sources is plagiarism and will result in a failing grade for the assignment.
Approved topics along with questions you MAY choose to answer, but are not required to:
1. Capital Punishment - Should it be allowed? Should the Supreme Court provide a more clear ruling on this? Should the national government address the issue or should local and state governments?
2. Legalizing Marijuana - Should Marijuana be legalized and taxed? Should medicinal marijuana be allowed in all states? Should the issue be address at the national level or at the state level?
3. The Electoral College - Should the United States abolish the Electoral College and allow the popular vote to determine the outcome of Presidential Elections or should we continue to use the Electoral system? What effect does this have on democracy?
4. Lowering the Drinking age Limit - Should the legal drinking age be lowered to 18 from 21? Should you be allowed to serve in the military and vote before you can legally drink? Should exceptions be made for certain personnel and should this be decided by local and state government or by the federal government?
