In Arkansas, the U.S. Army Corps proposed an irrigation project in to replenish impoverished groundwater aquifers across a 242,000-acre agricultural region. Studies conducted in the east-central Arkansas region revealed that underground aquifers were in great danger of drying up to a point of depletion. Restricted access to crop irrigation would completely devastate rice growers, both physically and financially. Farmers rely on rice as a mainstay crop to feed numerous families and generate revenue. The intended project outcomes include creating new wetland habitats for wildlife and providing relief to struggling farmers.
