You may have seen or heard advertisements on television or other sources promoting drugs sold by the various pharmaceutical companies. Consider these statements:
· Do you believe there are any ethical issues if a physician is paid to promote a medication? Some states do not allow pharmaceutical companies to discuss their products with physicians, yet they can advertise to the general consumer. Is this right?
· Should the American consumer be educated on medications? If yes, how?
· When you go to the physician, do you tell him or her which drug you should take? If your physician disagrees with your request, what would you do?
· What about medications like Vioxx® and Celebrex® that were taken off the market after several people allegedly died from taking them? Do you think officials at the FDA approved these anti-inflammatory (pain) medications too soon? (Celebrex® has since been approved for use with restrictions).
· Do you think Pharmaceutical representatives should take government officials and medical personnel out for "informational" meals or other events?
· While considering your responses, keep in mind that America has one of the most advance medical care system in the world. People from around the globe flock to the US to receive the most advance medications and surgical procedures.
