Assignment:

People's attitudes about obesity have varied across the ages.

Some tribes in Uganda, Mauritania, and Nigeria practice to this day what is called "bride fattening": young females are force-fed to become obese because fat women are considered to be of higher social status and, therefore, more attractive.

See video: Young girls force-fed for marriage in Mauritania | Unreported World

In Japanese culture, obese sumo wrestlers are considered "heroes" or "stars" and consequently, also enjoy a very high social status.

In the European Middle Ages, fat people were considered more attractive and of higher social status. We can see those tastes in the paintings of Peter Paul Rubens.

But in today's Europe, the skeletal French fashion models seem to have a high status.

And sometimes, we also hear about fat shaming and charging differential rates for health insurance, airline tickets, etc.

But the pendulum is swinging in the other direction with the rise of the so-called "plus sized models" such as Tess Holiday: Self Cover Star Tess Holliday Speaks Out About Body Positivity | Megyn Kelly TODAY

So, what is your take?

Should we be 'modern and scientific' and go with what the healthcare data tell us?

Or should we be more relaxed and accepting of others' not-so-healthy lifestyles?
