Question: Mary was diagnosed with breast cancer. Her treatment plan is chemotherapy and surgery. Mary refused treatment. Even though her physician explained the risk of refusing treating, she is adamant about her decision. Mary just exhibited patient autonomy (an individual right to make their own decision about medical care). Should patient autonomy be allowed even if the diagnosis is life-threatening?
